Recession Depression and a Kind Find

So…not only do we have to try to manage the “blahs of January” but we are constantly being bombarded by the news telling us nothing but horror stories of the failing economy, bankrupt businesses and plunging stocks. Yet, it’s supposed to be a new year, full of hope & resolutions and good will…right? Not so much these days…at least not on the streets of Toronto.

After just being back from a luxurious month away with my husband, we have jumped right back into the wonderfully challenging world of small business…and the future is looking a bit grim. With many of our favourite local shops closing their doors due to this economic slam it is often hard to feel hopeful. But we at Daily Apple persevere – and use our creativity to try to weather this storm.

So what does this have to do with tips about healthy living, you may ask? Here goes..today’s Daily Apple: A Daily Dose of Kindness

I don’t think I have ever seen so many cranky people in my life as I have these first 2 weeks of January. Everyone is sleep deprived, sun-deprived and just downright down. As I braved the traffic and the cold last night and grumbled  my way home from teaching, I found my wonderful husband Chris shovelling out all of our neighbours’ driveways after the snow plow had boxed them all in. I was instantly uplifted…and I thought to myself  “this is what is important in tough times like these, helping out your fellow man!” (or wo-man)

So – feeling particularly low today? Here are just a few things you can do to improve your mood:

  1. Hold the door open for a line of people at the subway,  bank or your local Starbucks…anywhere the people flock to!

  2. Give up your seat on the bus

  3. Let someone in to your lane on the highway or to make a left turn

  4. Bring a cranky-pants co-worker a hot chocolate!

  5. Send a homemade note to an old friend

Hope this helps lighten the mood a wee bit.
